Architecture

Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings fit for human use. Architecture degree programs focus on rendering designs, both digitally and by hand. Theory, technology, and history are also primary focuses during education. Most architects work in teams with other architects, as well as with engineers, on top of clients and consultants, so excellent communication and the ability to work well with others are often required by employers. Ideal candidates for an architecture degree are creative problem solvers and logical.

Baccalaureate and Graduate Education

Education required to become an architect is typically longer than a standard 4-year degree. The Bachelor of Architecture (BArch) is a 5-year program, or students with pre-professional degrees can earn a Masters of Architecture (MArch), a 2-year program.

Licensure and Certification

Regional requirements vary, but, to become a fully-fledged architect, most licensing boards require a Bachelor of Architecture of Masters degree, plus two years of practical work experience, prior to taking the Architect Registration Exam (ARE). All divisions of the test must be passed, and some states require continuing education to maintain the license. Along that same vein, most US states also require that the school where the architecture degree was earned is accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB).

Career options for graduates with a degree in architecture include: Residential Architect, Commercial Architect, Interior Designer, Green Design Architect, Landscape Architect, Urban Designer, Industrial Architecture.
