What is Biomedical Science?

Biomedical science is an academic field that combines the studies of biology and medicine. In doing so, biomedical science focuses on health studies for both humans and animals. Students who choose to major in biomedical science examine a range of subjects from anatomy and zoology to nutrition and immunology. 

Upon earning a degree, some students who enter career fields in biomedical science contribute their knowledge to both biological and medical fields in a research or professional environment. For others, biomedical science degrees function as pre-med majors and their studies lead them to medical school and a career as a doctor.

The Biomedical Science Degree

While many students who major in biomedical science choose the pre-med or biomed routes, the biomedical science degree can also be used to land a large number of science-related jobs. Some of those careers even fall outside the biology or medicine fields. Biomedical science degrees are available at the associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD levels. Many students choose to study biomedical sciences all the way through grad school but it’s still possible to find a job with an undergrad degree.

Would I Make a Good Biomedical Scientist?

In order to be a biomedical science major, you’ll need to have an interest and aptitude for life science. Because you’ll be studying both humans and animals, you must be comfortable taking classes in biology, chemistry, anatomy, and zoology. In addition, part of biomedical science revolves around the study of disease so you must also be prepared to study subjects like microbiology and immunology.

As biomedical science is a major branch of the sciences, you’ll be spending a lot of time in the lab. Familiarity with lab equipment is essential since you’ll be using a microscope and centrifuge frequently in your study of cellular organisms and diseases. You’ll also need to be skillful with a scalpel for dissection. If you’re using your biomedical science studies as a pre-med degree, you might also be learning how to perform surgery. With this in mind, it’s important to have a strong constitution as you’ll be viewing cadavers and internal organs as a regular part of lab work.

There is also a large amount of pressure that goes into this field. For some lab work, you’ll be working long hours and will sometimes need to produce data on a deadline. Because science is a collaborative process, it helps to work well with others under these sometimes demanding conditions. While it may feel stressful for an academic environment, many of the professions associated with biomedical science are extremely high stress jobs. As such, your ability to endure difficult periods in the lab will help prepare you for being a biomedical scientist in the real world.

Associate level

Certain community colleges offer associate degrees in biomedical science and these programs can be completed in two years. In most cases, the associate degree in biomedical science is a pathway to a bachelor’s degree-granting program at a 4-year college or university. 

Oftentimes, students will earn an associate degree in biology and then transfer into a biomedical science program. Associate degree-level courses include: cellular biology, human anatomy, human biology, microbiology, genetics, and epidemiology. In addition to lectures, most of these classes include work in the lab or in the field.

Baccalaureate level

A bachelor’s degree in biomedical science provides an in-depth academic study of biology, zoology, and health sciences and usually can be completed in four years. The curriculum consists of an array of courses across a number of different sciences including chemistry and medical terminology. Most classes combine lectures and work in the laboratory. The biomedical science curriculum also contains a number of prerequisite courses needed to apply to medical school. 

Classes on the baccalaureate level include: basic neuroscience, cell biology, human anatomy, microbiology, and statistics. While many students use their undergraduate biomedical science education as the equivalent of pre-med majors to apply to med school, there are several jobs available to biomedical science majors who hold a bachelor’s degree.

Biomedical science jobs available at the bachelor’s degree level include: Biomedical Equipment Salesperson, Pharmaceutical Sales Rep, Cardiovascular Technologist, Sleep Study Specialist, Pathology Technician, Forensic Technician, and Science Journalist.

The average salary for these positions ranges from $47,000 (Sleep Study Specialist) and $55,000 (Cardiovascular Technologist, Forensic Technician) to $65,000 (Pharmaceutical Sales Rep) and $80,000 (Science journalist) at the high end.

Graduate level

For students who don’t use a biomedical science degree to apply to med school, there are still graduate school opportunities outside of the medical field. Many students choose to enroll in biomedical science masters programs and focus their studies on pursuing a research position. 

The biomedical science master’s degree curriculum features graduate-level coursework, lab experience, patient-centered service learning, and collaboration with faculty advisors. In addition, master’s degree programs can also include EMT certification and cadaver dissection. Some master’s degree programs can even be completed in one year. 

To get a research position at a college and university, a biomed degree is also available at the PhD level. Students with undergrad degrees in other scientific majors such as biochemistry, biophysics, or molecular biology are also eligible for acceptance into a biomedical science PhD program. 

During the first year, PhD candidates explore research in several fields like bioengineering and biomedicine to determine the subject area in which they wish to specialize. Once that is decided, the biomedical science PhD curriculum revolves around elective coursework and work in the laboratory, culminating in a dissertation and defense in front of faculty. A typical biomedical science PhD takes four to five years to complete.

Examples of biomedical science jobs at the master’s and PhD level include: Epidemiologist, Biomedical Engineer, Natural Science Manager, Chemist, Biochemist, Animal Biochemist, Clinical Immunologist, Medical Museum Curator, Hospital Administrator, Insurance Claims Adjuster, and Medical Librarian.

The average salary for these jobs ranges from $62,000 (Chemist, Insurance Claims Adjuster, Medical Librarian) to $86,000 (Epidemiologist, Biomedical Engineer).
