Child Development

Child Development

Child development is a field dedicated to examining the mental and educational growth of children at various ages and stages of the growing up process. It is one of the most common fields of study for students looking to become teachers at the preschool or elementary levels, as well as for professionals affiliated with elementary schools. A childhood development degree centers on teaching the stages of childhood as well as developmentally appropriate practices that correspond with each of them.

The Child Development Degree

Students looking to enter the workforce as early childhood educators often choose to earn a child development degree. In addition to providing training in the field of education, a child development curriculum includes classes in psychology, social sciences, and communication—all subjects that will be important when dealing with young children.

As students pursue their degree, most choose to focus on a specific concentration within the child development field. The child development degree is available at the associate, bachelor’s, master’s, PhD, and EdD levels.

Is a Child Development Degree Right for Me?

Since many childhood development majors enter the workforce as early childhood educators, it’s important to consider the qualities you’ll need to possess to teach children at a young age. One of the most important of those traits is a passion for teaching. As all teachers will tell you, there will be days when the only thing that keeps you going is that passion for the job.

Any time a job requires working with children, you’ll need to have patience and creativity in spades. It’s important to have a broad set of communication skills as well since you’ll have to teach lessons to kids representing a wide array of personalities. In this job, you’ll also be frequently dealing with parents in person and on the phone so you have to be proficient in talking to both young children and adults.

Early childhood education jobs require superior organizational skills to design informative and entertaining lesson plans and carry them out every class day. Cultivating the right amount of flexibility and disciplinary levels will serve well in this sort of position, to both adapt to unforeseen circumstances in class as well as letting children know when they need to get back on track.

Associate Level

Students attending community or junior college interested in entering the early childhood education field can pursue a child development associate degree. The associate degree curriculum provides an introduction to the field as well as the developmental stages of infants, toddlers, and school-aged children. Education will span the physical, emotional, behavioral, and language development of children at each level.

Associate degree classes include: cognitive development, child development theories, behavior management, child safety, and exceptional children. An associate degree-granting program usually requires two years and graduates have the option of finding an entry-level job in the workplace or transferring to a 4-year college or university to continue their studies.

Child Development Degree Jobs at the Associate Level Include: Preschool Teacher, Head Start Teacher, Teaching Assistant, Special Education Paraprofessional, and Daycare Provider.

The average child development degree salary for jobs at the associate level ranges from $24,000 (Daycare Provider) to $28,000 (Preschool Teacher, Teaching Assistant) to $32,000 (Head Start Teacher).

Baccalaureate Level

The bachelor’s degree in child development focuses on studying the social and academic development at each stage of childhood from birth through age eight. In addition, students are provided training to help guide and encourage young children through each stage. The child development curriculum focuses on literacy and instruction with particular attention to areas of diversity and the child’s place in their family.

Examples of classes at the baccalaureate level include: development assessment, child nutrition & health, psychosocial development in children, observation and assessment, young children with special needs, intervention for children with disabilities, and child abuse issues.

Many child development majors choose this field seeking a career in teaching. In addition to a bachelor’s degree, jobs in this field require students to pass a state examination leading to an early childhood education certificate. Requirements for the exam vary from state to state but all teachers at this level must possess a knowledge of language arts, reading, mathematics, social studies, and science. A student teaching assignment is usually a prerequisite to attain a job.

It’s also possible to earn an online child development degree at the bachelor’s level. All online programs feature a flexible schedule which makes them especially convenient for working students or those with families. Online classes feature multimedia lectures utilizing learning platforms like Moodle or Canvas and class message boards. If classes include an observation or field work requirement, accommodations can be made based on a student’s geographic location.

What Can You Do With a Child Development Degree at the Bachelor’s Level?

Examples of jobs you can get with a bachelor’s degree in child development include: Kindergarten Teacher, Elementary School Teacher, Preschool Director, Social Worker, Child Life Specialist, Parenting Educator, and Early Childhood Education Consultant.

The average salary for these positions ranges from $40,000 (Kindergarten Teacher, Child Life Specialist) to $47,000 (Elementary School Teacher, Preschool Director, Parenting Educator) to $57,000 (Social Worker).

Graduate Level

Students who wish to specialize in a particular subject area of this field can continue their education past the undergrad level and earn a master’s degree. The master’s in child development program enables students to choose an academic concentration such as adolescence, mental health, counseling, family services, or infancy and dedicate their research to this subject.

Courses at the master’s degree level include: infant development, divorce & remarriage, literacy development, and child growth. Several master’s degree programs involve a student teaching component and most can be completed in two years.

For students looking for a leadership role in the educational industry, child development degrees are also available at the PhD and EdD levels. The PhD in child development revolves around conducting original research in the field. PhD candidates hypothesize and test new theories on child development. Comparatively, EdD candidates work closely with education professionals on research directly related to teaching-related issues. PhD graduates gravitate toward careers in academia or social policy while EdD grads usually choose professions in educational or government leadership.

What Can You Do With a Child Development Degree at the Graduate Level?

Examples of jobs you can get with a graduate degree in child development include: Teacher Educator, Special Education Director, Curriculum Specialist, Behavioral Center Director, Principal, and Superintendent.

The average salary for these positions ranges from $69,000 (Curriculum Specialist) and $73,000 (Special Education Director) to $110,000 (Principal) and $160,000 (Superintendent).
