Colleges in Los Angeles

Colleges in Los Angeles

Los Angeles  is the most populous city in the state of California and the second most populous in the country. Officially the City of Los Angeles but more commonly referred to as LA, is in the southern region of the state and boasts a Mediterranean climate, which may be why there are more than 30 colleges and universities within the city limits, and even more in the Greater Los Angeles area.

There are three public universities in the city, two California State University campuses in LA and Northridge, as well as the University of California, Los Angeles, which is better known as UCLA, or the most-applied-to university in the US. Other notable schools in LA include Loyola Marymount University, the LA campus for Antioch University, Occidental College, and Woodbury College. There are also nine campuses in the LA Community College district, which include a Trade-Technical College. In the Greater Los Angeles region is the California Institute of Technology, better known as CalTech, the most selective liberal arts institution in the US.

With nicknames like “The Entertainment Capital of the World” and “La La Land,” as well as production studios for big-name networks including ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC, and both Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox calling LA home, it’s fitting that there are several private institutions in LA reinforcing that Hollywood sign. The City of Angels hosts the American Film Institute Conservatory, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (LA campus), the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, the Los Angeles Film School, and the Otis College of Art and Design. There’s also the USC School of Cinematic Arts, the oldest film school in the US.

On top of having the most congested freeways, LA also has some of the busiest public transportation lines, as well as the second-busiest airport, the Los Angeles International Airport, or, colloquially, LAX. The city is accessible via Amtrak, as well.
