Colleges in Phoenix

Phoenix is the capital of Arizona, the only state capital with more than one million residents, and 19 postsecondary institutions within the city limits. Also at home in the seat of Maricopa County are numerous performing arts venues, museums, and the Luke Air Force Base in the western suburbs. The Valley of the Sun is a hub for architecture, lured to the fifth most populous city in the nation by Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home and subsequent school, The Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. The city is also one of only 13 US metropolitan areas boasting representatives in all four major professional sports leagues.

Phoenix has a number of for-profit and religious institutions, as well as two-year institutions, which include Phoenix College, the oldest community college in the state and one of the oldest in the country. There are three private, non-profit institutions for undergraduate students in Phoenix: Arizona Christian University, Ottawa University, and Grand Canyon University. All three are religious institutions, as well, a category that also includes the Fuller Theological Seminary, Phoenix Seminary, and the Assemblies of God Bible College.

The city’s array of for-profit institutions include Argosy University, the Art Institute of Phoenix, Chamberlain College of Nursing, CollegeAmerica, Carrington College, Brookline College, Devry College, and, of course, the headquarters of the University of Phoenix, the largest for-profit network in the nation. Arizona State University, the largest postsecondary school in the region, has two campuses in the capital, in northwest and downtown Phoenix.

As part of the International Sister City movement, Phoenix has ten sister cities which foster the exchange of cultural, commercial, educational, and artistic opportunities for residents. Sister cities include Calgary in Canada, Catania in Italy, Prague in the Czech Republic, and Hermosilla in Mexico. Phoenix also hosts one of the ten busiest airports in the US, the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
