The Entrepreneurship Degree

Entrepreneurship is the process of founding, planning, designing, and implementing a new business. If the idea of launching a new business appeals to you, numerous business schools offer an entrepreneurship major to provide an education about the process of doing so. An entrepreneurship degree centers around the creative aspects of designing a new business and the process necessary to get it up and running. A business entrepreneurship degree is available at the associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD levels.

What Degree Do You Need to Open a Small Business?

While an entrepreneurship degree appears to be the most popular choice, there are actually many degrees that prepare you for a career launching your own small business. For starters, a business degree provides a backdrop in the fundamentals of running a small business while touching on numerous other important fields like finance and psychology. As a future small business owner, you can choose to focus on those specific topics by majoring in finance or psychology as well. Because selling a new business to consumers is a vitally important step in its survival, you could also learn the ins and outs of that process with a marketing major. Finally, since so many new businesses are launched in the tech industry, you can demonstrate your expertise in that field by majoring in information technology.

Entrepreneurship vs. Business

While some people may conflate an entrepreneurship degree with a business major, there are a few notable differences between the two areas of study. As mentioned above, an entrepreneurship degree features a specialized concentration on classes related to launching a new business. A business major, on the other hand, is a more generalized degree. It will cover topics like entrepreneurship and management as theories but it won’t feature in-depth classes in favor of a wider variety of subjects like risk management and international business. The choice between the two majors boils down to whether you want to graduate with a broader field of expertise in the business industry or if you want to focus solely on the process of founding a new business.

Would I Make a Good Entrepreneur?

Because starting your own business carries a certain amount of risk, it’s important to determine if doing so is the right path before you launch a career as an entrepreneur. The first quality you need to possess is self-motivation. You’ll be founding a new business from the ground up and this will require a lot of work. Early on, you’ll need to provide your own reason to do that work every day in order to make the business successful. And since there’s no road map to lead to success, you’ll have to rely on self-confidence to get you through the obstacles you face.

To operate your business early on, you’ll also need strong communication and people skills. A big part of making a successful business is motivating your employees to maximize their productivity so it’ll help to be skilled at motivational speaking and one-on-one communication. Furthermore, good people skills will be of assistance in selling your business to investors and selling your product to the public.

Associate Level

Several community colleges throughout the nation offer a business entrepreneurship degree at the associate level. This program provides an education in the fundamentals needed to found a new business, focusing on topics like the functions of business and creating a corporate structure.

An associate degree program also provides an introduction to networking with opportunities to meet with the local business community through guest speaker series and faculty mentoring. Furthermore, many entrepreneurship associate degree curricula offer opportunities for internships at area businesses. Examples of classes at the associate level include: product creation, business planning, and entrepreneurial finance management.

Entrepreneurship Major Jobs at the Associate Level Include: Advertising Sales Agent, Customer Service Associate, Assistant Store Manager, Sales Consultant, and Administrative Assistant.

The average salary for these positions ranges from $30,000 (Customer Service Associate) to $47,000 (Advertising Sales Agent, Assistant Store Manager).

Baccalaureate Level

The bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship combines courses in marketing, accounting, finance, and management with a focus on how each topic relates to launching a new business. In addition, the entrepreneurship major curriculum includes lessons on the risks that come along with founding and managing a new business. All entrepreneurship programs feature a general business education foundation. To help students gain real world business and networking experience, most entrepreneurship programs feature internship opportunities with local companies.

These programs also include simulation courses to give students a sense of what they will experience once they enter the small business community. A typical bachelor’s degree program in entrepreneurship takes four years to complete and all graduates are expected to demonstrate the ability to draft a business plan from scratch. Examples of classes on the baccalaureate level include: entrepreneurial marketing, business planning, entrepreneurial finance, small business management, and strategic decision making.

For students who want to earn a bachelor’s degree but are looking for a more flexible schedule, several colleges and universities offer an online entrepreneurship degree. These degrees feature similar curricula to programs offered at brick-and-mortar campuses but are designed to fit into the schedules of working students or those with families. Online programs feature classes in topics like business law, human resources, management, and financial accounting. In addition, all online students learn to develop a business plan from scratch. Certain online degree programs offer concentrations in specific industries or subjects such as human resources and logistics.

What Can You Do With an Entrepreneurship Degree?

Examples of jobs you can get with a bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship include: Small Business Owner, Business Consultant, Business Analyst, Marketing Manager, Business Reporter, Sales Representative, Recruiter, Non-Profit Fundraiser, and R&D Developer.

The average salary for a Small Business Owner is $59,000. For other positions, the average salary ranges from $42,000 (Business Reporter, Sales Representative) to $71,000 (Business Consultant) to $88,000 (Business Analyst).

Graduate Level

If you’re looking to advance your career in the business field, a master’s degree in entrepreneurship can help land a career in management. Master’s degree-holders are more in demand than a bachelor’s degree for high ranking positions in business and industry. These programs begin with business principles courses and then delve into entrepreneurial topics such as private equity, venture capital, and social branding.

In addition to preparing degree-holders to launch a new business, the master’s degree includes research and classes in business consulting, fundraising, and research and development. Outside of classes and research, master’s degree programs include opportunities to participate in business competitions and study abroad opportunities. A typical master’s degree can be earned in one to two years.

For students who want to receive the highest level academic training in founding a new business, certain business schools offer a PhD in entrepreneurship. PhD curricula focus on specialized concentrations like new product development, e-commerce, and business design. Outside of research, PhD students work as teaching assistants in business classes. The PhD culminates in a written dissertation and oral defense before business school faculty.

Examples of Jobs You Can Get With a Master’s Degree in Entrepreneurship Include: Human Resources Manager, Advertising Manager, Marketing Manager, Promotions Manager, Market Research Analyst, Product Developer, and Financial Analyst.

The average salary for these positions ranges from $63,000 (Market Research Analyst) to $72,000 (Human Resources Manager) to $108,000 (Promotions Manager).
