Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Students who love chemistry and find the health care field appealing may be interested in majoring in medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry. A medicinal pharmaceutical chemist uses his or her knowledge of chemistry and other sciences to help develop, test, and study drugs. It's a hard job, but it's rewarding to know your work is helping people live healthier lives. The core of a medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry program is biology and chemistry based. Classes will include topics like biochemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, chemical biology, microbiology, and cell biology. You'll probably also take classes in calculus, anatomy, and physiology. Graduating with a degree in medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry can lead to many different career paths. Many students work for pharmaceutical companies, while others work in the health care field, for government agencies, or at biotechnology companies.
